Quadra Island Salmon Enhancement Society was formed with concern for Quadra Island’s wild salmon and intention to support their populations and habitats. Salmon have been central to the ecosystem of this island for millennia, nourishing the forests, animals and humans who have made their homes here. Wild salmon stocks thrived up and down the Pacific coast before European colonization, and Quadra Island itself is traditional and unceded First Nations territory. QISES respectfully honours the traditional heritage of land and water relationships of the Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ (Laich-Kwil-Tach) first nations: the We Wai Kai, Wei Wai Kum, and Kwiakah First Nations. We also acknowledge our Coast Salish neighbours, the Xwemalhkwu and K’omoks Nations, who have close connections to these lands, waters, and fishes. QISES was founded to rehabilitate salmon populations due to destructive errors of colonization, which displaced peoples, habitat, and other living creatures.

The focus of QISES continues to be monitoring, maintaining, and enhancing Quadra Island watersheds, fish and fish habitat, and promoting public education about wild salmon and their habitat
